President’s Message
2008 was Wainwright’s Centennial year, and Wainwright Rail Park played an important role in the celebrations. Our contribution to the “Party in the Park, was to host “Little Obie”, CN’s safety train. Constable Robert Greer, CN Police, provided rail safety handouts, and our members handed them out to visitors at Wallace Park. The train was kept busy all day, and when it began to overheat, rides were suspended at approx 2.30 PM. I have spoken with Const. Greer since then, and he would welcome another appearance in Wainwright (although Stampede time is not available). He is open to suggestions for July that would fit into his busy Summer schedule.
July 20th was the celebration of 100 years of railroading in Wainwright. Our breakfast was well attended, and the park saw a steady stream of visitors all day.
The highlight of the day was the Canadiana Musical Theatre’s presentation of “The Ties That Bind”, at the Communiplex Theatre. We heaved a collective sigh of relief as the theatre began to fill up for the first show. The second, although a smaller crowd, was still well attended. The show was extremely well received. Thanks to all the donors who made this program possible, and to our membership for their work during this busy time.
We hired our first summer student last summer under the Alberta STEP program. Kevin Cameron worked out well, as he was well versed in our collection, and can talk at length about CN. He also provided much needed help with park maintenance. After working locally since last September, he is hoping to hire on with CN this fall.
Forms are now in hand for the 2009 STEP program, so interested individuals may now apply.
Many new contacts have been made, and there is potential for other organizations to join us for events this summer. We need to plan soon for events this summer.
The Town of Wainwright has recently begun considering a Heritage Committee (through the efforts of Gord Snyder, Wainwright Main Street Project Co-ordinator). His draft plan would see representation from WRPS on this committee. More about this in our regular meetings.
Thanks everyone, for your support and assistance.
